Rooted in Craft. Inspired by character
Timber & Type grew from a love of making — from the texture of wood to the beauty of a well-shaped letter.
What began as a personal project has become a small, working studio — a place to design, make, and explore the connection between materials, lettering, and honest craftsmanship.
Each piece made here carries the same intent: to blend thoughtful design with the warmth of something made by hand.
Behind the type
I’m Shane — a learner, maker, and long-time admirer of both timber and type. After years spent driving lorries and daydreaming about design, I finally took a different road and built something of my own. Timber & Type grew from that change — a small workshop where wood, typography, and design come together in quiet, creative ways.
I’m not a carpenter or designer by trade — just someone drawn to making things with meaning. Most of what happens here is simple, hands-on work: cutting, sanding, engraving, painting — the kind of making that leaves sawdust on your shoes and a few experiments on the shelf. It’s about process more than perfection, about taking an idea and giving it shape.
The workshop isn’t a polished studio. It’s a lived-in space, full of tools, offcuts, sketches, and the sounds of family life. My wife, Yolanda, and our triplets — Daniela, Liam, and Sara — often drift in and out, lending a hand or sharing a cuppa. Together, we make small things that carry a sense of care and memory — pieces shaped by hand, by time, and by family.
What Timber & Type Wants to Be
At its heart, Timber & Type is a creative space — part workshop, part journal. It’s where I make signs, offer services and make small projects for people who appreciate the charm of handmade work, and where I share glimpses of the materials, typography, and craft that inspire it.
There’s no grand plan — just a wish to keep learning, keep making, and to fill the world with a few more things that feel personal and well-made.
Thanks for stopping by
If you’ve taken the time to visit, read, or look through what I make — thank you. It means a lot that, in a world full of noise and fast things, you’ve paused here for a moment. Timber & Type isn’t a big operation; it’s a small family workshop with a lot of heart and a deep appreciation for honest craft. Every kind word, order, or message of encouragement helps keep the tools humming and the ideas flowing.
Whether you’re here out of curiosity, love of craft, or simply because you enjoy seeing something made by hand — I’m genuinely glad you found your way here. Pull up a chair, have a browse, and make yourself at home.
Shane, Yolanda, Daniela, Liam & Sara.
